Retail sales grow again

The quantity of goods bought in the retail sector in June increased by 2.2 per cent compared with June 2012, and by 0.2 per cent compared with May 2013, according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

Sales in department stores, boosted by strong take-up of promotional and clearance offers, helped to drive growth. The quantity of goods sold in department stores grew by 5.3 per cent when compared like-for-like with June 2012.

Internet sales again recorded strong growth, with the average weekly online spend in June growing by 18.3 per cent on the year. The online spend now accounts for 9.7 per cent of total sales.
