The Government has launched a new independent body to monitor business regulation in a bid to give businesses a voice in policy and red-tape decision making.
The Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO) will sit within the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and encourage stronger engagement between Local Authority and businesses when developing regulations.
Formed as part of the Government’s existing Local Better Regulation Office, it is hoped that local businesses will be brought more central to national regulation policy making. The BIS has also said that the establishment of the new body will be more cost-effective than the monitoring process already in place.
In a statement regarding the BRDO, the Government said that business regulation needed to be clear and easily understood to encourage investment, growth and citizen protection.
Amongst its aims are to improve regulation experience for businesses, councils and citizens by:
- Operating and extending Primary Authority so businesses can work in close contact with their local authority.
- Simplifying the delivery of new or changing regulations by advising ministers.
- Creating a new business forum to promote engagement.
- Working with Local Enterprise Partnerships to improve local regulation.
Business minister, Mark Prisk, said: “I welcome BRDO staff and the expertise they will bring to the drive to improve regulation for frontline businesses. Working alongside the Better Regulation Executive, they will help to deliver a coherent programme of regulatory reform, and help British firms get on with running their business.”
