Director of People, Karen Arch reflects on BHP’s series of Great Place to Work award wins.
I’m approaching my first anniversary at BHP and what a first year it has been. When I joined in December 2022, one of my first emails, as I mentioned in a previous blog, was informing me that BHP had received two awards from the global authority on workplace culture, Great Place to Work®. (UK’s Best Workplaces™ and UK’s Best Workplaces for Wellbeing™).
Building on that success has been a big part of my role and one supported by the whole team at BHP. It’s fantastic that we’ve continued to gain recognition for the positive working environment and culture we have across our offices, with a further two awards bringing the total to four.
The new awards recognise us in the categories of UK’s Best Workplace for Women™ and the UK’s Best Workplace for Financial Services and Insurance™.
Great results first time
Determined by hundreds of employee surveys and Culture Audit submissions from company leaders, these awards are a true external reflection of the businesses involved. This year marked the first time that we, as a business, have undertaken the Great Place to Work survey, so it’s really encouraging to see such positive results so quickly.
Perhaps most exciting within these rankings was the fact that, in the financial services and insurance sectors, BHP ranked within the Top 5 nationally and was the highest placed Yorkshire company on the list.
While the awards themselves are a brilliant accolade, myself and the senior team were thrilled that our survey results found that 86% of our employees believe BHP is a great place to work compared to the UK average of 54%.
Investing in our people
There is always room for improvement but the fact that more than half of all employees (64%) have been with us for more than two years, and 11% of them for 20 years or more, is proof that, as a business, we believe in investing and supporting our people. In the same way that we do our clients.
