The newest member of our Tax team in Chesterfield is Senior Manager Megan Utley, who joined us in October. Read our latest Meet the Team interview to find out more about Megan – from what she does in her day-to-day role to her dream holiday destination.

What attracted you to work for the firm?

I was attracted to BHP because of the culture and the can-do attitude of the partners I met during the interview process. You feel like you can really make a difference by working here.

What does your day-to-day role involve?

Looking after the tax affairs of our clients – whether this be their compliance work for the year, or any advisory pieces that we might notice and be able to discuss with the client to help them and their business at any stage.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best thing about my job is the feeling that you are able to help someone, who probably doesn’t know how to navigate the tax legislation, to make a difference with their business.

Where did you grow up and go to school?

I grew up in Nottingham, living pretty close to the city centre, and then came to the University in Sheffield. Now I live half-way between the two!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

It went through phases – a gymnast, a pop-star, a teacher, and then quite early on, I realised I wanted to be an accountant due to my love of Maths!

What is the best meal you’ve ever eaten and why?

We went to “The Man Behind the Curtain” in Leeds – where they serve lots of small courses. But they all blew our minds for being different, experimental but tasty (potato custard anyone?!).

What do you prefer – a TV series, book or film? What are your favourites?

I definitely prefer books, although if I’m honest I’m more likely to watch a TV series! I do like a good gameshow, and I also enjoyed watching Stranger Things.

Where is the best place you have ever visited and why?

We’ve just been on our honeymoon, which was to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. We travelled round Sri Lanka with our own tour guide, and the different experiences you can have in the one country is amazing (city, jungle, dry plains) – as is the food there! My highlight was visiting an orphaned elephant sanctuary and seeing them being fed!

What is the one place on earth that you would want to visit (that you haven’t already) and why?

I think it would be a big culture shock but I’d love to visit Japan to experience all the technology they have, but also to see the cherry blossom trees and the amazing scenery!
