When did you join BHP?
I joined BHP at the end of October 2020, as an experienced hire.
What attracted you to BHP?
I already knew a few people at BHP, meaning there were already some familiar faces, and I had heard good things already. This was combined with the fact BHP was placed highly in The Sunday Times top 100 employers list, along with winning the best employer previously at the Yorkshire Accountancy Awards.
What is your role and what does a typical day at work look like for you?
I am an Assistant Manager working in the corporate tax team. I work predominantly in Corporation Tax Compliance, meaning I review tax computations and returns, offer ad-hoc advice to clients, and am involved in other larger pieces of advisory work.
What do you like best about working at BHP?
The people are all really nice, helpful and approachable. There is also lots of flexibility and variety with the work. There are regular firmwide catch-ups, with the partner group and senior management team being approachable and transparent.
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
Offering constant support in my role, whilst allowing me the responsibility to learn and continue developing. I have clear targets and regular feedback discussions in order to ensure things continue to go well and improve.
What are your highlights and key achievements?
Becoming ATT qualified, developing client relationships and, most recently, getting a good move to BHP with a step up in responsibility and trust.
What or who inspires you at work?
The members of my team, both senior and junior, and the clients to whom I’m aiming to provide a top service to.
Have you been involved in any initiatives or activities at BHP? If so, tell us more!
So far I have played five-a-side football at BHP, as well as taking part in some virtual social activities such as quizzes and bingo. I will definitely be taking part in more activities and initiatives going forward – it has been difficult to this point though due to Covid restrictions!
What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about applying for a role at BHP?
Believe what you read online. Read reviews and read first-hand accounts of the company. The online information is accurate and representative of the company, and the company is true to the values it communicates.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work? Do you have any interests or hobbies?
Playing and watching football. I’m a big Leeds United fan I also help in coaching a junior football team. I’m a fan of most other sports and enjoy watching all different sports.
I’m also a big fan of music, particularly indie and rock, and I enjoy going to gigs.
If your life was a film or a book, what would it be?
Soul. The fairly recent Disney Pixar movie. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend it highly!
What boxset are you currently watching?
Sons of Sam, and Mindhunter.
What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?
Italian without a doubt! Nothing better than pizza and pasta.
What is the best place you have travelled to and why?
Vietnam. The culture was so different to what I was used to, and the views and country itself were beautiful.
If you weren’t a Tax Assistant Manager, what would your dream job be?
Anything related to football, player ideally…Low expectations clearly!
