A further £6 million package will be made available to the estimated 2,500 businesses affected by the December flooding in the north of England.
The government has announced that the new money is in addition to the £5 million previously announced on 9 December 2015.
Small business minister Anna Soubry, said:
“It’s been a devastating Christmas for many business owners in the north of England who now face the challenge of repairing the damage and reopening their doors.
“Small businesses are the lifeblood of towns and cities right across the country and it is vital that we help them start trading again as soon as possible.”
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued advice to homeowners who need to deal with any possessions that have been affected by the flooding:
- contact your insurer to seek advice and find out whether an inspection is necessary
- take photos of damaged items
- get rid of any items that may pose a health risk (such as food)
- try and make a comprehensive list of all damaged items
- try and provide a cutting of items like carpets and soft furnishings so that similar replacements can be provided.
James Dalton, director of general insurance policy at the ABI, said that insurers understood the need for a quick response “as the clean-up begins”:
“This is why insurers will take a pragmatic approach and advise you on how best to dispose of flood damaged items as quickly as possible.”
