We’d like you to meet one of the newest members of our Digital Finance team, Accounts Director Simon Kendall. Simon has been with BHP for seven years and previously worked in our Audit team. Read on to find out more about Simon, his career so far and what he enjoys doing away from the office.

When did you join BHP?

I joined BHP in 2016 following a merger with GVT (Goodband Viner Taylor) – a local Sheffield-based practice. I initially joined the audit team with a mixed audit and accounts portfolio. In 2023 I switched from my role as an Audit Director in the Audit team to an Accounts Director in the Digital Finance team.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Working with people is the simple answer. I enjoy working with the team, training, coaching, and helping others develop. I am where I am because of the help of my peers, and training and supporting each other is key in the culture at BHP.

I really enjoy working with business owners to understand their successes and challenges both personally and in their business. My key motivation is helping people and businesses to overcome a challenge or issue, or to capitalise on an opportunity or strength to achieve their personal and professional strategy and goals.

How has BHP helped you in your career so far?

Working at BHP has provided me with significant opportunities and support as my career has progressed. I have been able to push myself while also learning and receiving support from my colleagues and Partners.

Have you had any other (non-accounting) jobs before BHP? If so, what was your favourite?

I have had a number of previous jobs while at college and university. I have to say my favourite was working as a Doorman. The people interactions and conversations, dealing with difficult scenarios, expecting the unexpected and getting to see many great events and artists was certainly a perk. While I’m not so sure I would choose that career now, while at university it did help me develop personal skills that have helped me throughout the rest of my career.

Where did you grow up and go to school?

I was born in Plymouth but grew up and went to school in Sheffield so very much consider Yorkshire as my home. I went to the University of Sheffield in 2008 and studied Accounting and Financial Management.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?

Outside of work, I enjoy travelling both overseas and within the UK. I can often be found exploring the countryside with my wife Suzy and Golden Retriever Barney. You can also often catch me watching Sheffield Wednesday or watching a show at the theatre.

Where is your dream destination?

My dream destination would be to visit and explore Space or travel to the bottom of the ocean – to go somewhere where little is known and where there is a real opportunity to see and discover something new!
