In our latest meet the team interview, we found out more about Senior Tax Manager Peter Dobson. Pete is a line manager in our Private Client team. In his spare time, he enjoys playing and watching sport and training his gundog.

When did you join BHP?

I joined BHP in February 2019.

What attracted to you to work for the firm?

Having worked for one of the Big 4, after a relatively short stay at a regional firm I knew that I wanted to work for a good size firm but one that gave me a better work-life balance and the opportunity to do a wider range of work.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I lead the residency team within BHP’s Private Client team and also handle overseas employment tax issues. My typical day includes dealing with new queries, reviewing work and managing the team. I also work on the marketing strategy for the Tax team, leading on Private Client planning and content.

How has BHP helped you in your career so far?

BHP has allowed me to broaden my knowledge and experience base. They have also helped me develop my management skills and learn to tailor my approach to both my colleagues and clients.

What are your highlights and key achievements?

Being promoted to Senior Manager and being tasked to develop and manage the residency team within the wider Private Client team.

What or who inspires you at work?

The opportunity to build my area of expertise at BHP and to help grow the Private Client team.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?

BHP offers those who have worked at a bigger firm the opportunity to take on a wider range of work, but it is equally good for those coming from a smaller practice to learn new skills with an experienced tax team. The Tax team’s knowledge is wide-ranging, and we always have a point of contact that people can refer questions to or learn from.

I believe that the tax graduate programme is a strong selling point as it gives trainees the opportunity to spend time in different departments to help them understand the nuances of each one – helping them to shape their own career but also providing an opportunity to put what they have learnt on their study courses into practice.

What do you enjoy doing outside of working?

Playing cricket and golf, watching ice hockey and training my gundog.

What do you prefer? A TV series or a film? And which genre do you prefer?

I prefer a TV Series; League of Their Own, Friday Night Dinner, Inbetweeners…something like that.

If you could host a celebrity dinner, who would you invite?

That would have to be Freddie Flintoff, Lee Mack and Dwayne Johnson.

What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?

Indian – who doesn’t love a curry?

What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?

I definitely prefer a beach holiday.

If you weren’t in your current role, what would be your dream job?

My dream job would be a Professional Sportsman or Gundog Trainer.
