BHP takes on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
A team of 70 people from BHP are taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge later this month with the aim of raising £15,000 for a variety of charities across the UK.
The group will tackle the 24.5-mile (39.2km) route, which includes 5,200ft (1,585m) of ascent – traversing the peaks of Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in under 12 hours.
The charity trek will take place on Friday 20 May, starting in Horton-in-Ribblesdale in the Yorkshire Dales.
All those taking part have either chosen to raise money for charities close to their hearts or to support BHP’s elected charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. Each team member has a target of £200 and the team hopes that they will be able to reach their ambitious overall fundraising goal of £15,000.
James Houseman, Senior Manager at BHP and event project manager, said: “We’re really looking forward to taking on the Three Peaks, especially after two years of lockdowns and restrictions.
“We wanted to give our staff the chance to do something big for charity, and the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge provides the perfect opportunity for them to get out in the fresh air, work together as a team and raise lots of money for charity.”
“It’s fantastic to see so many of us getting involved – we know it will be extremely tough, particularly for the more inexperienced walkers – but we’ve brought together a great support team to provide advice and encouragement on the run up to the event, and on the day itself.
“It’s been fun to organise and a privilege to unite the team. We can’t wait to get up there and start walking!”
BHP Charity and CSR Partner Rachelle Rowbottom said: “It’s great to see how many of our staff have been inspired to take part in our first Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.
“At BHP, we have a strong commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility and we’re proud to be able to help the charities that our people care passionately about. I’m really looking forward to following their progress and supporting the team on the day.”
