Tax, trade and transparency are some of the key issues Prime Minister David Cameron will raise with world leaders at this month’s G8 summit.
The UK’s agenda hopes to encourage global growth, prosperity and economic development and will focus on three areas:
- ensuring tax compliance – measures to strengthen international standards and tackle what the Government deems as ‘aggressive’ tax avoidance
- advancing trade – support free trade on a global scale
- promoting greater transparency – support of more open information about the ownership of companies, land and the flow of money between developing countries.
David Cameron said the G8’s greatest challenge is “to restore strong and sustainable growth to the world economy.”
“When times are tough, some want to put the barriers up, to look inwards, and to protect themselves from the world,” he said.
“But Britain and America stand for a better way. We have a precious opportunity to transform the global economy – not by less openness and less free trade, but by more. And we must do everything possible to seize it.”
Leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the USA will meet at the G8 summit at Lough Erne golf resort in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, on 17 and 18 June.
