Meet the team – Owen Morris

Owen Morris joined BHP in November 2022 as a manager in our Sheffield Corporate Tax team. Owen enjoys working on range of advisory projects and supporting our Corporate Finance team, Translink UK, with due diligence work. We asked him about his career achievements and inspirations, as well as his interests outside of work.

What attracted to you to work for BHP?

After five years at my previous firm, I wanted to move to a larger team to further my development and BHP came highly recommended.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I work in BHP’s Corporate Tax team and my day usually consists of a mix of compliance work and advisory projects. The focus of my compliance work is reviewing Corporation Tax returns, and the advisory projects can be incredibly varied, including group reorganisations, shareholder exits and assisting our Corporate Finance team with tax due diligence on business acquisitions. No two days are quite the same.

How has BHP helped you in your career so far?

The team has such breadth and depth of knowledge, and everyone is so generous with their time to share their knowledge. It’s a very supportive team with a keen interest in your personal development.

What are your highlights and key achievements?

I was so happy when I passed by ACA and CTA exams. It was a lot of hard work over a number of years, and it was really gratifying for it to pay off.

What or who inspires you at work?

I think it’s often difficult to identify something specific that inspires you, but seeing the hard work of my colleagues makes me want to be part of the BHP team.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?

Go for it! It’s a great place to work with great people.

What do you enjoy doing outside of working?

I’m a fan of playing and watching both cricket and football, so they occupy large portions of my time. I also have a dog that needs plenty of walking, so I spend a lot of time out in the Peak District.

What do you prefer? A TV series or a film? And which genre do you prefer?

I really like TV shows where I can binge episodes back-to-back until the TV threatens to turn itself off. I’ve been watching The Wire recently and everyone has recommended watching Succession, so that might be next on my list.

If you could host a celebrity dinner, who would you invite?

My dream dinner guest would be Michael Palin. He’s such an interesting man who has seen so much of the world. He would have some incredible stories to tell.

What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?

I don’t think I have a particular cuisine that is my favourite, I just enjoy eating lots of food! I think that’s my favourite thing about travelling – getting to try new foods and restaurants.

What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?

I struggle to sit still when I’m on holiday, so I really enjoy city breaks as I love getting to see new places and things.

If you weren’t in your current role, what would be your dream job?

It was always my dream to play for Sheffield United, but a distinct lack of ability ended that ambition quite early!
