In our latest edition of Meet the Team, we chat to Digital Finance Director Mark Wright.
When did you join BHP?
I joined BHP as an apprentice accountant in 2003 after completing A-levels.
What attracted you to work for the firm?
I was clear that I wanted a career in accountancy, but I didn’t really fancy going to university and so an apprenticeship in accounting was exactly what I was looking for. BHP has a great reputation and the prospect of learning on the job while being given the opportunity to study for a professional qualification was perfect for me.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
A typical day for me would involve helping problem solve for existing and potential new clients and my team. Lots of Teams/Zoom meetings and phone conversations while I pace around the office, much to the annoyance of my colleagues!
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
I would probably refer to myself as a ‘lifer’ as I’ve spent my entire career so far at BHP. It’s fair to say that I didn’t realise just how great an opportunity I had when I first joined the firm at 18 years old, but I’m very grateful to the partners and my colleagues who have helped me along the way.
What are your highlights and key achievements?
Apart from qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant, I would say I’m most proud of the part that I’ve played in helping grow the firm’s Digital Finance offering from a team of two people and a handful of clients, to what it is now with almost 40 members of staff.
What or who inspires you at work?
I’m inspired when I see colleagues of all levels work hard to look after our clients. I enjoy coming to work because I feel supported by a great and forward-thinking team of people. This inspires me with confidence that we can continue to deliver a great service to our clients and motivates me to keep improving and learning new things.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?
My advice would be to definitely do it. It’s a great place to work, with a great culture and lots of opportunities.
What do you enjoy doing outside of working?
I am a bit of a petrolhead so when I get some spare time, I enjoy tinkering with cars and motorbikes. I also enjoy spending as much time as possible with my young family.
What do you prefer, a TV series or a film? And what genre would it be?
I enjoy watching films, especially comedies.
If you could host a celebrity dinner, who would you invite?
It’s a tough one, but probably Lewis Hamilton, Tom Cruise, Alicia Keys, Larry David (to be ‘the middle’), Will Ferrell, Rebel Wilson and Jamie Foxx.
What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?
My go-to comfort food would probably be a burger, but I like all cuisines and I’m keen to try new things.
What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?
I prefer a beach holiday.
If you weren’t in your current role, what would be your dream job?
My dream job would be Formula 1 driver.
