Assistant Accountant Sam White joined BHP and the healthcare team in September 2019. Find out what he enjoys most about his work and what he likes to do in his spare time.
What attracted you to BHP?
The opportunities offered to help me progress, not only professionally, but also as a person. From the very first interview I knew that BHP would have the perfect culture for me to develop into the person I am today!
What is your role, and what does a typical day look like for you?
My role at BHP is Assistant Accountant – a typical day includes the preparation of GP partnership accounts, tax returns and limited company accounts. However some days see me do more specialised work to assist the management team.
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
BHP have provided me a platform to undertake my studies whilst also having the opportunity to develop plenty of experience in the workplace. It is a great place to work if you are looking for somewhere to develop your career both practically and education wise.
What are your highlights and key achievements?
My greatest achievement so far would have to be completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and helping raise over £1,000 for charity alongside a few of my Healthcare teammates.
Who or what inspires you at work?
In the time that I have been at BHP, I have seen colleagues go from my current level all the way up to management roles! The opportunities to progress within BHP inspire me to be my best and push for this myself.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?
The exams are very hard work, but it will be worth it once you are finished with them!
What do you enjoy doing outside of working?
Outside of work, I am a Sheffield Wednesday season ticket holder (very rough I know!!) and had some of the best weeks of my life watching the recent play-off campaign. Aside from this, I absolutely love golf, despite not being very good, and regularly go to Portugal to play abroad with a large group of mates!
What do you prefer? A TV series or a film? And which genre do you prefer?
Always a series! They are so much more gripping than films and I get very involved with the characters. Three of my most recently watched series are “The Walking Dead”, “Andor” and I am currently binging my way through “Grey’s Anatomy” – so not really a specific genre for me.
If you could host a celebrity dinner, who would you invite?
Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori and Danny Rohl – three of the best in their respective sports!
What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?
This is a toss up between Portuguese and Indian and it would kill me to decide. My word these garlic mini squids you get on the Algarve are a joke, but a sit down curry with my mates is also unreal. I cannot choose!
What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?
Tough one. City breaks offer me opportunity to explore different cultures and cuisines, but sunny holidays offer me the chance for golf, beers and a tan! I try to alternate between the two – the next being a trip to Oslo!
What would your dream job be if you weren’t in your current role?
Asking me now, I would say that playing on the PGA Tour is an absolute dream – however my ability brings me back down to earth! At this point, I would revert to my childhood dream of being the driver of a steam train.
