Health and safety guidance to be made free online

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced that it is to give away its guides on workplace safety for free as from the autumn.

Speaking at the launch of the HSE’s new strategy, chairwoman, Judith Hackitt said that she appreciated that for many smaller firms getting hold of the right advice and understanding what health and safety means in practical terms can be a challenge.

To help SMEs, HSE has decided to make over £1 million worth of their current paid for publications freely available via their website.

From September 2009, around 250 publications that contain health and safety advice and guidance will be posted on the HSE website in PDF format to view and to print.

The publications cover the full range of HSE’s guidance as well as detailed information on associated codes of practice and safety regulations.

HSE said it was making the information available to help employers better understand their legal duties and what health and safety precautions they need to take.
