My BHP story – Jacob Long

Jacob chose to study history at Northumbria University and, as he neared the end of his course, he started thinking about what he wanted to do for a career. Find out how he went from history graduate to trainee accountant.

What were you doing before you joined BHP?

I was finishing my history degree, and, like many students, I was weighing up my options for what to do next!

Why did you choose to apply to BHP?

I was looking to keep living in a city and wanted to leverage my skillset in a role that I found interesting. I knew that BHP had an excellent reputation, and having been told about the scope for progression, I knew I wanted to work here after my first interview!

Why VAT?

I have always found “the grey area” to be the most fascinating topic in anything I have chosen to pursue, and I think that VAT is no exception. I truly love learning the rules, exceptions, and exceptions-to-the-exceptions to VAT – even though it can sometimes make my head numb!

What was your first day like?

Like most, I was suitably overdressed in a full suit and tie! I was introduced to the VAT department, shown around the Sheffield office, and attended my fair share of inductions. It was obviously a lot to take in, but everyone was so supportive. Even now, I still double check desk booking system to find out where certain rooms are!

What have you learned since joining?

Aside from the many intricacies of VAT (which I am still desperately trying to retain!), I have learned that truly knowing and understanding your client is half the battle and will do a world of wonders for any job you are tasked with.

What do you enjoy most about your working at BHP?

I know it’s a cliché, but I love the people and the variety of work available for a trainee like me.

And now, time to find out a bit more about your life outside work!

What’s your favourite food?

I’m a big lover of food, but I would say Indian is broadly my favourite cuisine – I love a spicy curry paired with some Peshwari naans!

Do you have a favourite TV programme/box set?

I would say Peep Show and the XFM podcast – the latter is less of a TV programme, but because of how many times I have it on repeat, I had to include!

What’s your favourite film?

I’m a big history buff, and my go-to is always Downfall (2004). Alternatively, I always end up watching the Star Wars prequels at some point in any given year.

What is the best book you’ve read?

I’m reading (and greatly enjoying!) Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema Speculation.

Favourite holiday destination

Admittedly, while I have a particular fondness for Germany, English seaside towns hold a special place in my heart – particularly Skeg-Vegas!
