At BHP, we train people from all backgrounds, whether you’ve just finished your A-Levels, have completed a degree in any subject or you’re looking for a career change. In the next instalment of our ‘My BHP story’ series, we’ve been finding out more about Benjamin Smith.
Ben is currently a trainee tax assistant in our Sheffield office. Ben initially pursued a career in recruitment but started his apprenticeship with us in September last year following the completion of his master’s degree in business administration. Read his story:
How did you start your career?
After graduating from university for the first time, I worked in recruitment and specialised in the temporary placement of HGV drivers, so this is quite a change in career for me!
Why did you choose BHP?
I had heard that BHP was a great place to train, so I researched it and from this it was clear that the leadership team are passionate about driving a people-centric approach. I was impressed by this culture and the focus on personal and professional development, which has been evident ever since the day I joined.
Why Tax?
The dynamic and fast-paced nature of tax appealed to me. It’s an area of the profession where I felt I could really get stuck in, develop my skills and make a positive impact for clients.
What was your first day like?
It was exciting and friendly. When you start, you are assigned a buddy who shows you around and gives you a tour of the facilities. It was great to get in, meet the team and bond over a welcome lunch!
What have you learned since joining?
In short, a lot! BHP provides ongoing targeted and departmental training, CPD opportunities, and a high standard of tuition in collaboration with training partners.
This positions you well to learn a lot on a range of things inside and outside of the specialism you train in. More specifically, I have learned a lot around tax computations, how to put them together, and the right questions to ask when doing so.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I would have to say the people I work with. Everyone is very welcoming and supportive, which helps you to settle in quickly. And I love the variety in the jobs you do – BHP have a very diverse range of clients, so it’s great to get perspectives into many different businesses.
Finally, tell us a bit about yourself!
What’s your favourite cuisine?
Nachos, fajitas, anything Mexican really. I enjoy spicy food!
Your favourite TV programme?
Only Fools and Horses; old but gold!
And what would be your favourite film?
The Shawshank Redemption, although I have seen it a few too many times now.
What is the best book you’ve read?
The Chimp Paradox, it’s very good for managing your mind.
Do you have a preferred holiday destination?
Spain, but mainly because my family live there! Discounting that, I would say Cuba. The beaches are amazing and the old American cars there are very cool.
And finally, do you have a favourite pastime?
Walking my dog – there is endless beautiful countryside around Sheffield! I really enjoy playing football, too.
