In our latest Meet the Team interview, we chatted to Melody Jagus, Manager in our VAT team. After spending many years working for HMRC, Mel has now been with the firm for two years. We found out more about her role at BHP and what she likes to do in her spare time:

When did you join BHP?

I joined BHP in November 2020.

What attracted to you to work for the firm?

I already knew people who worked in the VAT team who had said that BHP was a great company to work for.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

There is a lot of VAT compliance and advisory work. It’s great because it has a lot of variety.

How has BHP helped you in your career so far?

I worked at HMRC for 35 years prior to joining BHP and everyone has been really helpful in showing me how things work in practice and how to help clients.

What are your highlights and key achievements?

My greatest achievement is receiving a message from a charity client thanking me for helping them to achieve VAT relief on a bus for transporting ill patients.

What or who inspires you at work?

I’m inspired by the complexities of the VAT work and the support of the team around me.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?

Go for it. BHP is a fantastic firm to work for and, if you work hard, they will help you achieve your ambitions.

What do you enjoy doing outside of working?

I enjoy watching football and taking my daughter to train and play. Seeing her smile and enjoy the game is the best part.

What do you prefer? A TV series or a film? And which genre do you prefer?

I love a good film and particularly enjoy action-packed films and romance.

If you could host a celebrity dinner, who would you invite?

Gerard Butler – I bet he has some fantastic stories to tell.

What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?

I like Chinese food; I find it has a lot of flavours and variety.

What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?

I would always choose a beach holiday so that I can relax and read a book.
