In our latest meet the team interview, we’re chatting to Katherine Robinson, Manager in our Corporate Tax Team in Sheffield. Katherine joined us shortly after qualifying as a Chartered Tax Advisor in April 2018. Read on to find out more about her role at BHP and what she likes to do to relax when she’s not in the office.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
I work in BHP’s Corporate Tax team, where we deal with both tax compliance and advisory projects. With compliance, I tend to review tax computations prepared by my colleagues for both our corporate and charity clients.
The advisory projects I get involved with depend on the needs of the client, but I tend to provide advice to charities on the tax treatment of their income streams, prepare and review R&D claims, and carry out transactional-related work and remuneration planning.
My role also includes developing our trainees. This involves coaching them, providing them with feedback and advice on the jobs they have helped me with, as well as organising training sessions to ensure they have the skills they need to aid their progression and development.
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
BHP has been amazing!
From the moment I joined as a Tax Executive, managers and above were keen to get me involved in projects they were working on. They provided coaching and assistance with anything I needed, as well as feedback on how the project went and how to improve. I appreciate the time they took to help me develop not only my technical skills, but my soft skills too.
I work with an amazing team where everyone helps each other at every level. Working with such great people has shaped me into the manager I am today.
When are you happiest?
When I’m on my annual family holiday in Weymouth. There are 14 of us who go there, so it does require a lot of planning and organising. But it’s worth it!
We all get on so well, make great memories and enjoy some delicious food (well, that’s only when seagulls aren’t trying to steal our lunch on the beach!).
What do you prefer – a TV series, book or film? What are your favourites?
I prefer a good TV series. I enjoy comedies and anything light-hearted, especially after a long day in the office. Something like The Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner or Josh for instance.
I’m not a fan of reality TV, but I am currently enjoying the Below Deck franchise. I admire the gorgeous locations and the very talented chefs they have. I’m always hungry after watching an episode!
What do you do to unwind after a day in the office?
I like to spend time with my family and my very energetic dog, Comet. Since Comet came into our lives, there is no such thing as relaxing at home, ha!
