What is your role at BHP?
I’m a tax adviser, guiding family businesses and their owners through the various tax and financial matters that arise throughout their life cycle, from start-up through succession and to potential sale. Over my 27 years with the firm, I have served as a trusted advisor to a diverse range of businesses and their families. I also lead our R&D tax service for innovative companies, helping those clients navigate the changing landscape of R&D tax relief.

What are you most passionate about?
I’m passionate about creating opportunities and solving problems for my clients in a straightforward and honest way. I encourage my team to have the same approach to our clients.

What keeps you motivated?
Tax planning can be varied, and the long-term importance of the work we do for clients means that clients are placing a great deal of trust in our expertise and experience. Trust means a great deal to me, and as such, I strive to advise clients in a manner that I would want to be advised myself. Achieving a good solution for a client is a great feeling.

What advice would you give trainees starting out?
Be inquisitive, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or challenge the team you’re working with, as collaboration is encouraged.

What is your favourite thing to do at the weekend?
I love watching my son and daughter play football, which takes up a great deal of time (including the social side afterwards). I have a season ticket for Wakefield Trinity rugby league, and to fit this in, I get up early to sneak in a round of golf or two when I can.
