In this week’s Meet the Team interview, we’re chatting to Harrison Dexter – Senior Accountant in our Audit team in Sheffield. Harrison has worked at BHP since leaving school and is now an audit senior and key member of our social committee.
When did you join BHP?
I joined in September 2017 as a school leaver after doing A Level Art, IT and Geography.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
As an audit senior, my day to day involves leading audits at clients’ sites and remotely to provide top quality assurance for a wide variety of businesses. My specialism within the audit sector is professional services clients such as solicitors and quantity surveyors, which make up a good amount of my work.
I am also part of BHP’s Social Committee for the Sheffield office. This involves me planning and organising events throughout the year, from small scale pizza lunches to large parties at great venues in Sheffield!
What is your proudest moment in your career so far?
One area where I have always struggled is exams. I would say my proudest moment in my career would be becoming AAT qualified – particularly passing my Financial Management exam, which I had previously failed on three occasions. I don’t think I have ever been more relieved to pass an exam!
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
BHP has helped me massively with my confidence and ability to speak to people. With most of my work being client facing, I have learned how to better converse and hold formal and informal discussions, as well as present information to clients in meetings far more effectively. This has allowed me to build strong relationships with so many new people, both inside and outside the firm.
What do you do to unwind after work?
After a tough week in the office, I like to chill out on the sofa with a glass of red wine and watch a movie.
What do you enjoy doing outside work?
Outside of work, I enjoy playing golf and cooking. I love doing new things and I always try to play new golf courses or try out new recipes or food that I haven’t made before.
What do you prefer – a TV series, book or film? What are your favourites?
I prefer watching films. My favourites are The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Hot Fuzz and Ratatouille.
Where is the best place you have ever visited and why?
Barcelona is probably one of the best cities in the world that I have visited (after Sheffield)! La Sagrada Familia was one of the highlights of the trip and I have to say that the food there was the best I have ever eaten.
What is the one place on earth that you would want to visit (that you haven’t already) and why?
I would love to travel to Thailand in the future. I really want to visit the elephant sanctuary and see some of the wildlife out there, as well as try new types of food from a different part of the world.
If you weren’t working at BHP, what would be your dream job?
My dream job would probably be a chef. I would love to run a kitchen as I really enjoy a fast-paced environment and experimenting with new and different types of food.
