Today we’re meeting another Tax Team member – Alice Wood, Senior Accountant in our Private Client Team in Sheffield. Read our interview to discover what a typical working day looks like for Alice, and find out what she enjoys doing in her spare time.
When did you join BHP?
I joined BHP in September 2017 after completing my A-Levels.
What attracted to you to work for the firm?
I didn’t think university was the right route for me. I liked the idea of working alongside studying, and I had heard that BHP was a great place to train. I also knew that I wanted to complete the ACA CTA qualification and BHP was one of the only firms in the area that offered that qualification route.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
As part of BHP’s Private Client team, I prepare and review tax returns for a wide variety of clients and answer their queries throughout the tax year, as well as writing reports and getting involved in advisory projects. I also help to look after the new trainees, which I find really rewarding.
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
The support when completing my exams was invaluable, both from the HR team and my colleagues in the Tax team. While I was studying, there was a culture of exams coming first, and I found a real flexibility in the training programme to enable me to get the experience I wanted and needed.
What are your highlights and key achievements?
My biggest highlight has to be qualifying for both ACA and CTA. It took many hours of studying and 18 exams in total, but it was a real proud moment when it was all over.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?
Go for it! It’s a great place to work with lovely colleagues and clients.
What do you enjoy doing outside of working?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family, as well as cooking and baking – but not the washing up! I’m also part of my local young farmers club and sit on several other committees within the young farmers organisation.
What do you prefer? A TV series or a film? And which genre do you prefer?
I prefer a TV series as I like to know what happens next – I’m no good with cliff-hangers! My favourites are usually crime/police dramas, but sometimes you need a bit of rubbish reality TV.
What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?
Italian is my favourite cuisine, mainly because I love pasta, pizza and anything cheesy!
What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?
Is all three an option?! I’m not very good at relaxing or sitting still for too long so, after a few hours by the pool, I like to explore the area and try out the local cuisine.
If you weren’t in your current role, what would be your dream job?
I had a place to study Agricultural Science at university, so it would probably have to be something in that sector.
