What is your role at BHP/Translink?
I am a Partner in our Corporate Finance team and have spent over 15 years helping business owners and management teams navigate the often complex world of transactions. I specialise in the lower mid-market and have advised clients on a range of matters, including company sales and acquisitions, growth capital raises, and management buy-outs.
A core part of my work is supporting business owners in achieving both their professional and personal ambitions throughout the different phases of their business journey, from raising investment to accelerate growth, through to strategic acquisitions, and ultimately realising the wealth they have built when the time comes to sell or step back. I take pride in building long-term relationships and being a trusted advisor at each stage of the journey.
What are you most passionate about?
I take great pleasure in working closely with my clients, developing strong relationships and helping them achieve their aspirations.
What keeps you motivated?
Seeing team members develop and progress in their careers. I enjoy coaching and mentoring colleagues, and take real satisfaction in supporting them in building their confidence, skills, and experience in delivering successful transactions.
What advice would you give trainees starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out in a career in corporate finance is to learn as much as possible from those around you. Take every opportunity to gain exposure to all areas of a transaction. In the lower mid-market, there are always opportunities to deal directly with a business’s decision-makers. Deals can be demanding, but perseverance, a great attitude, and a willingness to get involved are the best ways to build experience and confidence, which will ultimately lead to a truly rewarding career.
What is your favourite thing to do at the weekend?
With two young kids, I spend most of my weekends on the side of various sporting pitches. With any spare time, I enjoy taking long walks in the Peak District, eating out with my family, and squeezing in some exercise in between.
