Business so far ‘unaffected’ by swine flu

Swine flu is making little impact on business in the UK, a new survey has suggested.

In a poll of 750 firms carried out by the Institute of Directors (IoD), some 85 per cent reported that business operations have not been significantly disrupted by the virus outbreak.

A majority of the firms questioned said that they had issued guidance notes on how their business should deal with a flu pandemic.

Some businesses, however, expressed disappointment that a small number of employees have been taking advantage of the guidance provided by the NHS.

Corin Taylor, senior policy adviser at the IoD, said: “So far companies have not been severely affected by swine flu, with directors able to focus on the immediate priority of staying afloat during the economic crisis.

“We may be in the calm before the storm if swine flu does develop into a full blown pandemic later in the year, but there has not been much impact on day-to-day operations up to now.”
