Rob Weate joined BHP six months ago as Tax Assistant in our Sheffield Office. In this blog, we’re catching up with Rob to hear more about his experience so far and what he’s looking forward to next!

How have you found the first six months at BHP?

I have really enjoyed my first 6 months at BHP as I begin my career in the world of finance. The whole department has been incredibly welcoming and friendly, which helped me to settle in and hit the ground running.

What attracted you to BHP?

Seeing the “Great Place to Work” certificates on the BHP website when I first applied was something that really enticed me, as finding somewhere with a positive work environment was hugely important to me. I also knew while attending the University of Sheffield that I’d love to stay in the city after graduating. I used to walk past BHP on the way to University, so it was always on the back of my mind that maybe I’d end up here one day!

What does your day-to-day role involve?

On a day-to-day basis, I primarily focus on completing tax computations for corporate clients, working closely with various departments to ensure compliance with tax regulations. I also regularly ring HMRC on behalf of clients to sort out any issues – meaning I have gotten very used to the HMRC hold music!

What do you enjoy most about working in corporate tax?

I enjoy the fact that tax is a constantly evolving field, meaning there is always something new to learn. This can create new challenges seemingly every day, but the collaborative nature of the way we solve them can be extremely rewarding.

What has been your highlight from the last six months?

I really enjoyed my first day out on-site as it provided an opportunity to meet clients and gave me a greater understanding of the impact our work has. I also recently represented BHP in a 5-a-side charity football tournament against other businesses from across the region, which we won, raising money for a worthy cause in the process.

What aspirations do you have at BHP?

I am eager to continue building my expertise in corporate tax and gradually assume more leadership responsibilities within the team as I gain more experience. I am also committed to continuing to grow and develop personally throughout the process.

What piece of advice would you give to someone joining BHP?

My biggest piece of advice would be to actively embrace opportunities to learn; there are countless opportunities to gain new skills and knowledge. If you approach every day with a positive mindset and a willingness to learn and develop, then you’ll go far!
