This week’s Meet the Team interview is with Kay Colliver, Assistant Tax Manager in our Private Client team in Sheffield. Kay joined BHP in 2016, following its merger with her previous firm.
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
I work in BHP’s Private Client team and my main focus is on preparing and reviewing tax returns. My client portfolio is varied so no one return is the same. I’m also part of the Teachers team so I review Teachers’ returns throughout the year. In addition to preparing returns, I also get involved in advisory work and writing reports.
How has BHP helped you in your career so far?
BHP is very supportive. If you want to achieve something, BHP will help you. We are also very much a team. You can ask any member of the team for advice and they will be happy to help you.
What or who inspires you at work?
This is a really hard question, as I can’t pinpoint one person. I take inspiration from all the team. We all have different strengths and I know I can call on any of them to pass on their knowledge.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for a role at BHP?
I would say go ahead and apply – BHP it a wonderful place to work. The team is so friendly.
What do you enjoy doing outside of working?
I have a young son who takes up a lot of my time. He’s very sporty, so at a weekend I’m often in a park playing football with him. But I’m no Lionel Messi – my football skills are very basic!
What do you prefer? A TV series or a film? And which genre do you prefer?
I don’t watch a lot of TV but I do prefer a TV series over a movie. I enjoy a crime drama or a restoration programme – I especially love The Repair Shop.
If you could host a celebrity dinner, who would you invite?
I would invite Kevin Hart. He’s a brilliant actor and so funny, he would definitely make me laugh. I would also invite Stacey Solomon as I enjoy her TV programme, Sort Your Life Out. I love to organise things at home, so I would like to discuss with her how best to sort items around the house.
What is your favourite type of cuisine and why?
My favourite cuisine is Italian. I could eat endless amounts of pasta!
What type of holiday do you prefer? Beach, active or city break?
For my main holiday of the year, it would have to be a beach break. My beach holidays have changed over the years as my holidays are now spent in the pool playing pool games rather than soaking up the sun and relaxing! That said, I do enjoy a city getaway for a few days. I like to be able to visit different locations every year.
If you weren’t in your current role, what would be your dream job?
I would love to be a nurse and care for people.
