Ever wondered what it’s like to lead a busy charities department?
In this week’s feature, we step into the shoes of Laura Masheder, our Head of Charities and Not-For-Profit, to see what a typical week looks like. From client meetings and strategic planning to championing causes close to our hearts, discover how Laura balances it all, and why they’re so passionate about supporting the third sector.
“One of the things I value most about my role is the variety—no two days are ever quite the same. From team strategy sessions to client meetings and audit quality reviews, each week brings a new set of priorities and opportunities.
Here’s a look at how this one unfolded.
Monday
I started the week in our Chesterfield office, where I caught up with the team and aligned on key projects. A key focus of the day was our **Not-for-Profit Partner and Director Strategy Catch-Up**, discussing our strategic approach to supporting this sector and ensuring we continue to add value for our clients.
Tuesday
Tuesday was all about client engagement, with a pre-year-end meeting. I always enjoy these conversations—getting an insight into our clients’ operations, understanding their plans, and identifying how we can support them. These meetings go beyond the numbers; they’re about building strong relationships and adding real value.
Wednesday
I focused on audit quality on Wednesday with an Audit Quality Monitoring Meeting. We reviewed key performance indicators, monitoring activity, and firm-wide policies designed to strengthen audit quality. Maintaining the highest professional standards is a key priority, and these discussions play an essential role in refining our approach and driving continuous improvement.
Thursday
Thursday was spent on client work and file reviews, working with the team in our York office. These collaborative sessions ensure we maintain high standards while also providing an opportunity to develop the team and share best practices.
Friday
Friday provided a change of pace, as I made the most of flexible working to spend time with family. With a bonus teacher training day in the calendar, it was a great opportunity to head to the Lake District and enjoy a well-earned break.
Balancing professional responsibilities with personal time is so important, and I’m grateful for the flexibility to make it work. A productive and rewarding week, rounded off in the best way!”
