A massive congratulations are in order for BHP’s head of audit, Paul Winwood, who has been awarded Partner of the Year at this year’s Yorkshire Accountancy Awards.
Paul has climbed his way to the top since joining BHP back in 2006 as a graduate, and become the firm’s youngest-ever partner at 34.
Paul has always stood out at BHP as a leader, which he has used to modernise our auditing service by implementing data analytics department-wide.
More importantly, Paul has never been afraid of breaking tradition.
By separating the historically combined resources of audit and non-audit with individualised skills and technology, Paul has helped BHP to stand-out in an increasingly competitive market filled with cloud-based software and specialised audit professionals.
Paul currently works with around 70 clients, and spends a great deal of time sourcing opportunities and improving efficiency to add value, which has included using a new integrated technology platform for seamless end-to-end service.
Of course, Paul still finds the time to look after over 100 talented individuals, and personally meets everyone who joins his team to find out how they’re enjoying the role, and discuss their future career.
But Paul is more than just an asset to BHP, he’s also an asset to the community.
Despite his busy schedule, Paul has been responsible for organising the finance and operations of Sheffield Triathlon Club for over two years as voluntary treasurer.
He’s also known to support good causes, and braved the mud to raise £2,000 for local charities by taking part in a Total Warrior off-road obstacle event.
What we’re especially proud of how Paul has become a role model for the accountants of the future.
Paul acted as a mentor and coach for Ellie Dignam in a brand-new role for BHP he had identified, data analytics manager. His guidance paid off as Ellie has now been recognised as Best Rising Star at the Digital Accountancy Awards.
He also gave a guest lecture to students at the University of Sheffield Business School about the future of accountancy, and how technology is set to shape the sector.
